Always risking new approaches, never standing still, continually open to fresh ideas; Gesa Riedel
succeeds in exciting people with her music and creativity, whether they
be students, schoolchildren or concert-goers. In
her work the cellist crosses boundaries; she is open for Baroque music on
historical instruments as well as for jazz.
Currently Gesa Riedel is
working on her first solo CD; jazz and classical elements are interwoven
in a harmonious whole. She is accompanied by jazz greats such as
Jochen Arp (saxophone), Nils Gessinger (jazz piano), Omar Rodriguez Calvo
(double bass) and Heinz Lichius (drums). South American flair is provided
by Chilean pianist Mario Alarcón. The CD has already been recorded and at
present the Castigo Sound Studio is working flat out to finalise
post-production. The CD will be on the market at the latest in the autumn
of 2007, in time for the Chilean Tour with Mario Alarcón.
Gesa Riedel has played with
orchestras or been accompanied as a soloist by orchestras; she has
travelled the world with the quartet Salut Salon; the pop band Orange
Blue recruited the cellist for their tours. Classical
chamber music with artists of different nationalities is part of her
programme, as well as novel modern compositions that are completely
unknown to many concert-goers.
At the same time Gesa Riedel
tries to pass on her unreserved enthusiasm for music: she works as a
lecturer at the College for Music and Theatre in Rostock and at the Institute Mensch Musik Hamburg; also in Hamburg she teaches young cellists; the youth orchestra Cool Strings is an
innovative project, which is the result of her co-operation both with Angelika Bachmann and with private pupils. Since
the beginning of 2006 Gesa Riedel has been the creative head of Cool
Strings. For the sixth time they have been prizewinners in the LTM
competition (LTM is a regional society of musicians and music teachers). For the first time they have been prizewinners in the Orchestrale competition in 2007.
Since 2007Gesa Riedel is supporting the privat Hamburg Brecht Schools in developing musical
projects. At the school, which is specialized on the needs of highly skilled
pupils, she teaches chamber music.
